Edgar Cayce and the Forgotten Leydig Gland

The Leydig gland, or Leydig cells, plays a key role in testosterone production and male development. Science views it mainly as a reproductive and hormonal regulator. However, Edgar Cayce believed it influenced energy, emotional well-being, and spiritual balance.

Known as the “Sleeping Prophet,” Cayce entered trance states to provide health and spiritual readings. He believed true healing required body, mind, and spirit alignment. In his readings relating to mental health disorders, a swollen or enlarged Leydig gland was mentioned as the main issue. He saw it as a creative energy center. He suggested that imbalances could lead to physical and mental health issues.

Cayce claimed that when the Leydig would swell, it would to about the size of a “ren’s egg.” He believed that it was a sign of increased energy flow or as a glandular imbalance. He also mentioned in a couple of his readings that it was a sign of spiritual transformation and heightened awareness. He described it as a “reserve” gland that influenced the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands.

David McMillin, a clinical psychologist, later studied Cayce readings in which the Leydig was mentioned. He noted that while mainstream science does not describe the Leydig gland growing significantly, glandular swelling in other endocrine organs (such as the thymus or adrenal glands) is well-documented in response to stress, illness, or energetic shifts.

Modern medicine does not recognize Cayce’s ideas on the Leydig gland, but they raise interesting questions. Could he have described a form of glandular hyperactivity? Could bulging in this gland reflect stress-related hormonal disruption? While speculative, his ideas encourage a deeper look into how different body systems work together.
